If you’ve seen the viral Dubai Chocolate all over TikTok and Instagram, this is my healthier take – and I think it might be even better than the original.
Think juicy fresh strawberries wrapped in creamy homemade pistachio spread, crunchy golden coconut and tahini, then coated in rich dark chocolate. You get that same creamy, crunchy, chocolatey combination that made Dubai chocolate go viral, without needing traditional kataifi pastry.

My version is naturally gluten-free, can easily be made dairy-free, and uses simple ingredients you can find at the supermarket. It’s also much more affordable than paying $40–$50 for one of the viral dessert bars. Also, I swap the kataifi for toasted shredded coconut. Once toasted until golden, it gives you that addictive crunch without needing wheat-based pastry.
And trust me – you won’t taste the difference.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
This recipe is:
- Made without traditional kataifi pastry
- Lower in added sugar depending on the chocolate you choose
- Made with real pistachios
- Crunchy, creamy and chocolatey
- Perfect for entertaining
- Much cheaper than buying viral Dubai chocolate desserts
You can also prepare most of the components ahead of time, making these a great dessert when you want something that looks impressive without spending hours in the kitchen.
No Kataifi? Use Coconut
Traditional Dubai chocolate gets its signature crunch from kataifi, a very finely shredded pastry.
To recreate that texture, I toast shredded coconut in a little butter or coconut oil until it becomes golden and crisp.
The coconut develops a beautiful nutty flavour as it toasts and works surprisingly well with pistachio and tahini.
Just keep an eye on it while it’s cooking — coconut can go from perfectly golden to burnt very quickly!
Ingredients You’ll Need
Toasted unsweetened coconut flakes
Traditional Dubai chocolate gets its signature crunch from kataifi, a very finely shredded pastry. It can be hard to find, so I like using unsweetened toasted coconut flakes. You can buy them pre-toasted or just toast them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) 7 minutes.
Homemade Pistachio Spread
You can use pistachio spread from the supermarket, but making it yourself means you know exactly what’s going into it. My version combines raw pistachios and a pinch of salt. For a sweeter, creamier texture, I sometimes add white chocolate (1/4 cup).
Pistachios
Raw works, but I like the nuttier flavour of roasted pistachios.
Strawberries
Choose ripe, sweet strawberries that are relatively firm. Make sure they’re completely dry before coating them so the chocolate sticks properly. This is not the kind of recipe I recommend using frozen strawberries for.
Tahini
A little tahini adds richness and a subtle sesame flavour that balances the sweetness of the pistachio mixture.
Dark Chocolate coating
Chocolate mixed with a touch of coconut oil. Use a good-quality dark chocolate you genuinely enjoy eating. If you want to keep the recipe dairy-free, simply choose dairy-free dark chocolate.
How to Make Dubai Chocolate Strawberries
1. Make the crunchy coconut
Heat a little butter or coconut oil in a pan and add the shredded coconut.
Toast over medium heat, stirring continuously, until beautifully golden.
This is our healthier gluten-free version of the crunchy kataifi layer.
2. Make the pistachio filling
Combine your pistachio spread, toasted coconut and tahini.
The finished mixture should be creamy but firm enough to mould around your strawberries.
3. Chill
Spread the pistachio mixture onto a lined tray and pop it into the freezer briefly.
This makes it much easier to handle.
4. Wrap the strawberries
Take a portion of the chilled pistachio mixture and gently mould it around each strawberry.
You can completely cover the berry or leave the leafy top exposed.
5. Dip in chocolate
Melt your dark chocolate with a teaspoon of coconut oil until smooth and glossy.
Dip each pistachio-covered strawberry into the melted chocolate, then place it onto a lined tray.
6. Refrigerate
Chill until the chocolate shell has completely set.
Then comes the best part: crack through that chocolate shell into the crunchy pistachio filling and fresh strawberry.

Tips for the Best Dubai Chocolate Strawberries
Dry your strawberries thoroughly.
Chocolate and water aren’t friends. Any moisture left on the berries can make the chocolate difficult to coat.
Don’t rush the pistachio butter.
It can take several minutes for pistachios to release enough oil to become creamy, as they are drier than other nuts. Stop and scrape down the sides of your blender or food processor as needed.
Watch your coconut carefully.
Stir it constantly once it begins changing colour.
Chill your pistachio filling before wrapping.
This will firm up the pistachio filling and make it easier to wrap around the strawberry. Warm pistachio filling is much softer and messier to work with.
Storage tips
Store your finished strawberries in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Because they contain fresh strawberries, they’re best enjoyed fresh rather than stored for long periods.
I recommend making them as close as possible to when you plan on eating them for the best texture.

Dubai Chocolate Strawberries
Ingredients
Dubai Chocolate Strawberries
- 2 tbsp butter optional
- 1 1/2 cup shredded coconut (150g)
- 1 cup pistachio spread homemade preferred or store-bought
- 1 tbsp tahini (15g)
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips melted (200g)
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 10 strawberries fresh or freeze-dried
Instructions
- If using butter, heat over medium heat until melted. Add shredded coconut and toast until golden brown, stirring continuously. You can also dry toast with no butter, or roast in the oven for 5 minutes (ensure you watch over it as it burns easily). This is the "kataifi".
- Add pistachio spread, shredded coconut and tahini into a bowl and stir until evenly combined. Spread mixture about 1cm thick onto a lined baking tray and freeze for 10 minutes.
- Add dark chocolate and coconut oil into a small bowl and microwave on low heat until smooth and glossy. Grab a section of the pistachio mixture and wrap around the strawberry – use gloves or slightly wet hands to prevent sticking. Then dip into the dark chocolate to completely coat the strawberry. Place on a lined tay and refrigerate for about 30 minutes until solid. Enjoy!
