Meatworks Co – Newest South Melbourne Gem
Posted on: March 19, 2016, by AMYLEEACTIVEShare:
Hidden away, just off the bustling Clarendon St in South Melbourne, is the city’s latest laneway gem – Meatworks Co.
A short walk away from South Melbourne Market, but hiding in the secluded Ross St, you still can’t miss the stunning industrial interior walking past – artfully made from 4 tonnes of steel, with refurbished materials from Indian ships and industrial factories.
The former 1930s garage has been converted into an inviting, rustic space, embellished with treasures from all around the world – built by the bare hands of the owner, hospitality entrepreneur and industrial engineer extraordinaireLindsay Jones-Evans (the name behind some of Sydney’s best eateries, Jones The Grocer and The Victoria Room).
Meatworks Co is a haven for carnivores, where head chef Travis Watson has cleverly created a menu that packs a meaty punch, fusing inspiration from both Eastern and Western cuisines.
Meats are expertly braised, roasted, and smoked, in Lindsay’s hand-crafted 450kg wood-smoker…look no further than Meatworks’ signature Smoked Meat Platter($28).
This tray of succulent goodness includes 10 hour Smoked Pulled Brisket, Sticky Lamb Ribs, Pulled Pork, Honey Soy Chicken Wings, and three house-made sauces to dip into – BBQ Sauce, Tomato Relish and Chilli. All were juicy and flavoursome, with the lamb ribs a stand out.
Accompanied with lovely house Yarra Valley Pinot Noir ($8).
Torn Pork Burger ($16.50): Hand torn pork, dill pickles, melted Swiss cheese, Chipotle, Mayonnaise, house slaw on a soft milk bun. On the smaller side, but the torn pork here is delectable and doesn’t disappoint.
Vegetarians need not despair, for there are beautiful options for seafood and salads too.
Pickled Carrot & Cucumber Salad with spiced peanuts, fried shallot and fresh herbs ($7) This is a must-try salad, adding freshness to balance the smokey deliciousness of the meats…I could honestly eat this salad all day long. Very reasonably priced for the generous portion too.
Meatworks Co will have your carnivorous cravings sorted, with a well-sourced wine list to wash it down. The 100-seat restaurant is currently open for breakfast and lunch, with dinner and bar launching at the end of this month.
